Strategic Communication: 5 Tips to Effectively Engage Up

As leaders of health sciences libraries, we are expected to communicate our organization's accomplishments, challenges and needs on a regular basis to a dean, provost or director who is often pulled in multiple directions. During this afternoon program, we will discuss the challenges of getting our message across, and focus on key ideas for being more strategic in our routine conversations. The format of the program will be highly interactive, so please bring your real-life examples that you are willing to share.

Gary Wasdin, Senior Consultant with DeEtta Jones and Associates, will facilitate our conversation on strategic communications. Gary works with academic and public libraries across the country on strategic planning, leadership development, and organizational culture. He has served as a director of both academic and public libraries, and as a senior manager in the corporate sector.

In each of his roles, Gary had significant responsibility for setting and articulating strategy, securing resources, overseeing staff and operations across geographically distributed libraries, and being the spokesperson for the libraries he represented. His depth of experience as a senior administrator, which includes working with boards and change initiatives, have positioned him as a facilitator with unique skills and perspectives.
