Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) Library, located in Camden, NJ seeks applicants for the position of Library Director. The Library Director provides dynamic leadership and oversight for the library. Reporting to the Associate Provost of Rowan University Libraries, and indirectly to the Associate Dean for Medical Education within the CMSRU office of Medical Education, the library director will oversee the planning and implementation of a variety of instructional programs, collections, and services. The library plays a central role in supporting the academic, research, and clinical enterprises of Cooper University Hospital and CMSRU, as well as its individual students, residents, faculty members, and staff. The director works closely with Campbell Library at Rowan University and RowanSOM Health Sciences Library colleagues on services and collections.

The Library Director will provide strategic and long-range planning, policy development, fiscal management, personnel supervision, and develop internal and external partnerships. The Library Director will advocate for the library within Cooper University Hospital, CMSRU, Rowan University, and the surrounding region. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment; a proven capacity to work effectively in teams and building partnerships; and will be committed to engaging in scholarly activities and providing service to the university, the community, and the profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the head of the CMSRU Library and is responsible for the direction and administration of all library activities
  • Provides leadership in creating a vision, development, and implementation of a viable strategic plan for the CMSRU Library
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the CMSRU mission
  • Develops, implements, reviews and updates library policies and procedures
  • Recruits, leads, motivates, promotes staff engagement and career development for the optimal performance of the CMSRU Library
  • Oversees and directs the daily facility operations
  • Provides leadership in the direction of current and future library physical space
  • Ensures the library is in compliance with LCME and ACGME standards; Participates in document preparation and LCME site visit
  • Maintains awareness of emerging library technologies and service trends
  • Oversees and evaluates research support services and resources
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates innovative outreach programs and services to achieve library objectives
  • Collaborates with faculty in the planning, development, and delivery of curricula related to information literacy, access, and management
  • Identifies grant opportunities and works with staff to prepare proposals related to library programs and operations
  • Represents the library on leadership and curriculum committees at the medical school, hospital, and university levels
  • Advocates and promotes the library within Cooper University Hospital, CMSRU, Rowan University, and the professional community
  • Participates in professional organizations for the purpose of continuing education, outreach, information sharing, and networking
  • Prepares and effectively manages the library’s budgets and anticipates future needs
  • Prepares reports and presentations as needed

Qualifications

Required:

  • MLS, MLIS, MS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited graduate program
  • A minimum of eight years of professional library experience in a biomedical, health sciences, or clinical environment
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in supervisory positions of increasing responsibility and integrative leadership
  • Knowledge and understanding of the changing roles and technologies of academic, research, and clinical libraries
  • Understanding of the current issues in medical education and training, and clinical practice
  • Comprehensive knowledge of library operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with biomedical and clinical research resources
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; excellence in written and oral communication
  • Ability to develop a strong collaborative working environment in the Libraries
  • Demonstrated skills in managing sizeable budgets within a complex infrastructure
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines to conceptualize new solutions to problems
  • Working knowledge of the laws governing information access, copyright, communication and archiving

Preferred:

  • Second Master’s, EdD, or PhD, preferably in a health science, education, science or public health area
  • Project planning experience
  • Experience facilitating strategic planning in an academic environment
  • Experience with a shared governance model  and a bargaining unit environment
  • Familiarity with the standards for library scholarship needed for tenure and promotion of faculty within the University Libraries
  • Established personal record of scholarship
