Opportunity Description

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNM HSC) invites applications for the Executive Director of the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC). We are looking for a highly motivated person to provide leadership and direct the operation of the library’s programs and services. The Executive Director will:

  • Lead approximately 26 personnel to develop and execute the library’s mission, vision and strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with UNM HSC leadership and other stakeholders to identify and meet information service needs.
  • Manage the development of frontline public services to advance the success of UNM HSC students.
  • Oversee the development of innovative programs and services for the community, continuing the HSLIC’s legacy as the state’s only publicly accessible health sciences library.
  • Ensure the library has the overall environment and resources to recruit and retain highly qualified information professionals.
  • Report to the Executive Vice Chancellor of the UNM HSC and serve as a member of the UNM HSC’s Leadership Council.

Job Duties

Responsibilities include:

  • Articulating long-term vision and goals for all library programs and services to align with the HSC’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Directing operations, including leading HSLIC personnel in developing policies, standards, procedures, and measures of quality and effectiveness for programs and services.
  • Establishing professional relationships, developing partnerships, collaborating and communicating both internally within UNM and externally with various organizations and constituencies.
  • Identifying diversified funding strategies to develop and mobilize resources for programs and services.
  • Leading human resources development, promoting a positive, diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Planning, overseeing and managing library facilities to create effective library and learning spaces, using data to improve usability and accessibility.
  • Mentoring and promoting HSLIC faculty development.
  • Engaging in professional and/or subject discipline organizations, research, or publishing that will have a significant, positive impact on HSLIC and the UNM HSC.

 

Qualifications

Required/Minimum:

  • Graduate Library/Information Science Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Ten years of experience in an academic library, at least five of which are in the health sciences.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in an academic library management role.
  • Applicant must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred:

  1. EdD, PhD or equivalent degree.
  2. Demonstrated communication, negotiation, listening, and collaboration skills.
  3. Evidence of effective organizational leadership and knowledge of all aspects of library operations.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to supporting student success and engagement.
  5. Experience developing effective advocacy, marketing, and communication strategies.
  6. Proven commitment to promoting diversity and creating an equitable workplace, including experience recruiting, hiring, and retaining a diverse faculty and staff.
  7. Experience overseeing library budgets, resource allocation and fund development in an academic setting.
  8. A record of direct teaching, mentoring, and scholarly activities.
  9. Experience with leading quality improvement processes and strategic planning.
