Job Description:

The medical librarian and director is responsible for Health Sciences Library administrative services related to the planning, staffing, budgeting, evaluation and delivery of the full range of academic library collections and services to the University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Medicine. This position reports to the chair, Department of Medical Education. This position is a non-tenured, multi-year faculty appointment. The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Full benefits package including vacation days, comprehensive health care, retirement plans, and relocation assistance.

Job Duties:

The medical librarian and director will:

  • Be responsible for overall management of the College of Medicine Health Sciences Library.
  • Set the standard of commitment to excellence in services, set goals and objectives, guide the staff to implement objectives, and set clear priorities in the allocation of resources.
  • Evaluate current activities for effective and efficient provision of information and information resources; develop measurements methods; collect and analyze usage data.
  • Set policies and procedures required for maintaining smooth and efficient library operations.
  • Implement a hiring plan and continually assess staffing needs and requirements in keeping the hiring plan current.
  • Promote high staff performance through teamwork, job training, and enrichment, encouragement of innovation and recognition for achievement.
  • Prepare personnel and operational budgets and monitor expenditures and charges to other departments, institutions, and vendors.
  • Develop a relevant, quality library collection in appropriate formats.
  • Deliver regular reports on the progress of the Health Sciences Library in meeting its goals and objectives.
  • Maintain communication with other academic health sciences libraries and medical library networks to promote cooperative arrangements that are mutually beneficial.
  • Serve on college and university committees as relevant to the mission and goals of the Health Sciences Library and the College of Medicine.
  • Participate in state, regional, and national professional organizations on a variety of development and service activities.
  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining up-to-date librarian and information services position responsibilities and library staff job descriptions for employees within the department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of best practices in librarianship with an emphasis on administration and management.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies in digital and web-based library services.
  • Knowledge of copyright and licensing issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Evidence of analytical, organizational, communication, project and time management skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and projects on time and within budget and in accordance with task/project parameters.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library relevant information technology applications. Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint or other productivity software.

Supervisory and Managerial Skills:

  • Experience and demonstrated skill in supervision, including hiring, orienting, training, development and mentoring of staff, organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and counseling, and taking disciplinary action as necessary. Ability to be proactive, flexible, and collaborative as a supervisor in order to accomplish departmental, library, and institutional goals. 
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports (10 FTE) and library staff and oversee the annual process within the library to ensure annual evaluations are conducted in a timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain clear communication with faculty, staff and students about services and resources and seek their input about satisfaction and priorities.
  • Ability to build and sustain effective interpersonal relationships with library and college staff, faculty and students, off-campus faculty and administrators, and administrators.
  • Capacity to foster a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student population.

Pedagogic and Scholarly Skills:

  • Directly engage and teach medical trainees in support of the M.D. program curriculum including participation, and leadership in several courses (programs): The Medical Informatics Longitudinal Curriculum Theme, and the UCF WikiMedicine Project for M4 students.
  • Publish articles on innovations and research activities of the Health Sciences Library.

Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science (MLS or MSLS) from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant academic health sciences library experience.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory/management experience.

 Preferred qualifications: 

  • Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) membership
