With the presence of health inequity and racial disparities within health access and treatment, representation and whose knowledge gets valued and uplifted can impact the quality of life in our communities. This class will look at the politics around citational practices that uphold the systemic structures within academia and research fields, like health and medicine, and the resulting harm that can occur.


Mark Coltrain, MLIS | Appalachian State University

Mark Coltrain is the Oral Historian at Appalachian State University. He received his MLIS from UNC Greensboro and an MA in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi. His research interests include working with undergraduate students to utilize or create oral histories to challenge narratives and as a form of counterstorytelling.

 

 

 

Breanne Crumpton, MLIS | Appalachian State University

Breanne Crumpton is the Information Literacy Librarian for the Humanities at Appalachian State University. She received her MLIS from UNC Greensboro. Her research interests include DEIAA work in libraries, social and racial justice to overcome systemic barriers, critical information literacy, and design justice.
