The Matheson-Cooper report, “Academic Information in The Academic Health Sciences Center: Roles for the Library in Information Management,” was a prescient study that foresaw the significance of the new information technologies for the future provision of health care. Most importantly, the report recognized new roles for health sciences librarians, encouraged the active development of continuing education courses in information management by the Medical Library Association as well as others to prepare librarians for these new roles, and stressed the importance of collaboration among professional associations, other agencies such as the National Library of Medicine, the formal education community, and health sciences librarians to help develop and use these information networks effectively to promote quality health care.
