Director, Library

The Director of the Library is responsible for planning and administering the budget, personnel, facilities, collections, and services of the Jay Sexter Library to support the academic, clinical, research, and community services mission of Touro University Nevada. The Jay Sexter Library supports all programs at Touro University Nevada, including the College of Osteopathic Medicine (offering Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Science in Medical Health Sciences degrees) and the College of Health and Human Services (offering graduate degrees in Education, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant Studies).

Job Duties

  • Develop and implement the library’s strategic plan in concert with the University’s overall strategic plan.
  • Develop and administer the library budget.
    • Direct expenditures from the library budget
  • Develop and maintain the collection of library resources.
    • Acquire new resources in all formats, including, but not limited to, electronic resources, books, journals, and multimedia, and new learning technologies. 
    • Participate in the negotiation of contracts for the acquisition of resources.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and mentor professional librarian faculty, para-professional staff, and student workers.
  • Meet and maintain accreditation standards that pertain to the library.
  • Write reports and prepare documentation for program accreditation and site visits.
  • Participate in the development of new University programs and services.
  • Maintain statistics on the utilization of the library, in particular, its resources, and services.
  • Develop, implement, review, and update library policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the physical environment of the library, including participation in library space planning.
  • Oversee the library’s online presence, including its website and online discovery and finding tools.
    • Evaluate and adopt new online applications and services, including mobile services that enhance the library’s functionality and usability.
  • Direct the day-to-day activities of the library.
  • Supervise all functions of the library, including cataloging, circulation, document delivery & interlibrary loan, materials processing, serials maintenance, reference, and research services.
    • Oversee and provide literature search support for students, residents, faculty, and staff. 
    • Oversee the presentation of instruction on information literacy and evidence-based practice, including the ability to formulate an answerable question, and to identify, locate and analyze information in a variety of formats.
    • Oversee and provide research development support for students, residents, faculty, and staff, on topics such as citation management, copyright, database searching, evidence-based practice, scholarly publishing, and systematic reviews. 
    • Oversee the orientation process for new library users – students, residents, faculty, and staff – whether on-ground or online so that they can utilize the library effectively.
  • Serve on faculty and institutional committees.
  • Collaborate with other libraries in the Touro College and University System.
  • Participate in professional activities and contribute to the Library profession.
  • Comply with state and federal laws, including copyright and confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience with MLS or MLIS degree. Membership in the Medical Library Association’s Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) would be an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of the medical and health sciences literature across a broad spectrum, including medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, osteopathy, physical therapy, physician assistant, and public health.
  • Solid working knowledge of the biological sciences, business, education, and legal literature.

Preferred 

  • Comprehensive understanding of library operations including document delivery & interlibrary loan, integrated library systems and discovery tools, and library web and link-out applications.
  • Knowledge and interest in new and emerging technologies, and their applications within healthcare, the healthcare system and medical education.
  • Working knowledge of the laws governing archiving, copyright, information access, and scholarly communication.
  • Evidence of on-going participation in scholarly activities. Experience in the grant seeking, writing, and awards process would be an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the enthusiasm and motivation to contribute to the growth and development of the Medical Library and the University.
